Effectiveness
Specifically, Manuka Honey contains Methyglyoxal. Regular honey does not.
When Manuka Honey is introduced to the body the Methyglyoxal is not suseptible to oxidisation and therefore it proves effective against gastro-intestinal disorders caused by bacteria including h. pylori and e-coli.
The Methyglyoxal (MGO) contained in Manuka Honey is approximately twice as anti-bacterial than the hydrogen peroxide found in regular honey. The combination of all the anti-bacterial elelments found in Manuka Honey makes it up to 8 times as potent in terms of anti-bacterial activity than regular honey.
In medical institutions in Japan, patients infected with h. pylori are encouraged to consume Manuka Honey in order to reduce the effects of the bacteria.
It is also said that the active elements of Manuka Honey have some anti cancer properties. While the amount of research into these effects is still in its infancy, it is hoped that further research will prove the accuracy of existing study results.
It can be inferred that Manuka Honey is not only useful in helping rid the body of h. pylori but may also be useful in reducing the effects of a number of other harmful bacteria and viruses.
According to Peter Molan, a professor at New Zealand's University of Waikato, the first person to research Manuka Honey, the incredible anti-microbial effects of Manuka Honey may have significant effect on cavities, gum disease, and the suppression of bacteria in the mouth that causes them.
Furthermore, it is though that because of its anti-bacterial properties, the direct application of Manuka Honey to mouth ulcers not only helps reduce the sufferers discomfort but also aides in healing. helps relieve the pain caused by mouth ulcers
It is worth noting that the sugar found in Manuka Honey differs to cavity causing white sugar and with the presence of the anti-bacterial properties of Manuka Honey, it is thought that cavities should not be of major concern.
